Bimal Dasgupta
Bimal Das Gupta was born in Bengal in 1917. Since his father was a government employee and spent most of his time between Delhi and Shimla, Bimal was left in the care of his uncle who lived in Berhampore, Bengal. To make his ends meet he joined the Victory magazine as an assistant director of all the artworks.
After the war, Bimal moved back to Delhi and started working as an artist at Dhoomimal Gallery and for advertising agencies. Post this, he also worked as a teacher in the College of Art, New Delhi for fourteen years. The main theme of Das Gupta's paintings was nature and it remained until the very end. In 1962, he got a fully funded scholarship for six months for a study tour of Germany and Poland. There he acquinted himself with the works of the great masters and it was extremely rewarding. He also briefly experimented with cubism from his tour across Europe and later dabbled with Neo-Tantrism.
"There is no end for a quest. Even at the evening of my life today I continue with the same zeal. The enchanting beauties of nature which inspired me to become an artist still holds the same sway for me and provide me with immense scope for my work, some of which are exhibited here."
