Yusuf Arakkal, is a renowned Malayali painter, born in Chavakkad, Kerela. He studied Diploma in painting at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore and later on specialised in graphic print-making. The artworks of Arakkal are very expressionistic in style and deep concerns about society and man are personified in his paintings. The artist produced a large collection of varied drawings, paintings, sculptures, murals, paper works, prints and writing. At present he is remembered as one of the most popular faces of contemporary figurative art.

He is felicitated with many awards and honours. These include prestigious Lorenzo De Medici Gold Medal at Florence Internazionale Biennale, Italy for his work ‘Bacon’s Man with the Child and Priest’; Karnataka Lalitkala Academy award in respective years 1979 and 1981 and many others. Yusuf Arakkal passed away in 2016.
