Dhoomimal Gallery proudly presents the exhibition Anekanta: A Journey in Indian Art. Anekanta signifies the coexistence of multiple truths, realities, perspectives and a recognition of multiple possibilities. It is with this thought that an array of artists from diverse parts of the country, backgrounds, periods and styles weave the rich tapestry of Indian art.
The art scene in India and the world has been associated with exclusivity, privilege and the haloed walls of the museums. In recent innovations, there has been a concerted effort to move art to more public spaces so as to be able to reach and impact the people. The trepidation of people to step into the portals of a gallery is what often prevents them from viewing and appreciating art. After all art speaks the language of the people and cannot be restricted to the spaces of museums and galleries. It is with this conviction that Dhoomimal Gallery’s exhibition, Anekanta: A Journey in Indian Art, brings to Bridal Asia, Indian artworks par excellence spanning over several decades, with each artwork telling its own truth, its own imaginative story in its own unique style. The artworks are carefully chosen from the masters, the veteran and senior contemporary, and the upcoming contemporary artists.
The government of India in the 1970s declared nine exceptional masters in art as the national treasures whose work embodied and contributed immensely to Indian art and culture. Anekanta presents some of these artworks. The exhibition carries works of the masters - some of the early painters of Modern India. These artists were from all across India, belonging to various art traditions, many being academically trained in schools of art and also establishing art institutions and villages, making their contribution to the development of Indian art invaluable. These artists are collectively known as the masters. From their work, the diverse traditions and styles of Indian art can be gauged. They are also an important visual response to historical events as well as creative expressions in the form of breath-taking portraits, landscapes, representational and abstract art. These artists are masters for their immense contribution to Indian culture and art. Art in post-Independence India gained tremendous impetus from the various schools and many other institutions - art
villages and groups that came into existence. Anekanta presents some of these masters of Indian art.
The efflorescence of Indian art has been effectuated by the incredible talent and work of many contemporary veteran and senior artists. The contemporary veteran and senior artists have decades of art practice behind them and are representative of the best and most acclaimed in Indian art. These artists have won many national awards, many of them are Padma awardees and recipients of international scholarships and honours. Their works are collected in various national and international museums and prestigious collections.
Indian art witnessed a boom circa 2000 when Indian art majorly entered the international scene through auction houses which were also established in India. Indian art today is once again in a stage of a tremendous surge. Contemporary artists are bringing forth intensely creative expressions combining the international global trends with their own contexts and ideas. They are also experimenting with a variety of medium, styes, digital art installations and also mixed and multimedia.
Dhoomimal Gallery in the exhibition, Anekanta: A Journey in Indian Art truly celebrates Indian art and visual artistic imagination from across all corners of India. It presents a unique selection of the masters, veteran, senior and contemporary Indian artists.
